Identifying a 'Gas Safe Registered' Engineer!

It is Gas Saftey Week 2019! Here at Able Skills we take health & safety seriously and aim to teach our students about risks and how to avoid them, on-site dangers and so on, during every single course from tiling to plumbing!

In this article, we will be discussing how to identify if a gas engineer is working legally! In the UK it is a legal requirement that everybody carrying out any type of gas work is registered with the 'Gas Safe Register' this ensures better safety of residents, families, the public and the gas engineer themselves. They do this by inspecting the work of Gas Safe registered engineers and investigating reports of illegal gas work. Additionally keeping the list up-to-date and accurate means that they can keep unqualified workers out of the industry.

All Gas Safe registered engineers carry a Gas Safe ID card.

How do I Identify a Registered Engineer?

Don't be afraid to ask for a Gas Engineers card, it is a legal requirement for them to show you if requested - check for the date to see if the card is valid and secondly look for the licence number it will be a 7-digit number! You can type this into the Gas Safe Register's website to check their legitimacy - www.gassaferegister.co.uk

All Gas Safe registered engineers carry a Gas Safe ID card.

If the engineer is not registered then you will see a message similar to this one pictured above, don't take the risk - an unregistered engineer is illegal and could cause harm to the systems in your home, or cause a more serious problem like a gas leak that could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning! Alternatively, you can call them on 0800 408 5500 - give them the license number and they will inform you if the engineer is a risk or has been correctly registered and is currently Gas safe!

How do I become Gas Safe Registered?

An ACS will need to be completed before you are eligible for Gas Safe registration and this is a requirement for all operatives involved in the installation, maintenance and servicing of domestic gas appliances and pipe-work installations. Also, every Gas Safe registered business renews their registration on an annual basis and updates their qualifications every 5 years, meaning you will need to refresh your memory on gas safety every 5-years! You can apply online, they have made it as simple and easy as possible - applying costs around £362 - do not try to avoid becoming registered because ultimately you will be found out!
