Becoming an electrician can lead to a varied and interesting career, with good earnings potential. However it is necessary for those wishing to become electricians to undertake formal qualifications, to include a 17th Edition Course.

These 17th Edition courses aim to familiarise students with the BS 7671 (2008) 17th Regulations Edition. They are based mostly on theory work, as the regulations are explained to candidates and then theoretical examples of each regulation are given. They also cover the IEE On-Site Guide, which updated the BS 7671.

In order to gain the qualification, candidates must pass a City & Guilds examination, which is set out in a multiple-choice format. Once they have passed the exam, they will be awarded a Level 3 Certificate in the Requirements for Electrical Installations BS7671:2008.

The 17th Edition coursesare suitable for a number of different tradesmen, including those who are already working as electricians, those who are working as electrical contractors, and also for those who are planning to or have already enrolled on Part P courses, as most governing bodies for Part P registration require that candidates have obtained the Level 3 Certificate within 12 months. They are also a good choice for those who have not yet completed their full electrical training but are considering it, as this course is relatively short and provides a good background to the current regulations.
