Plumbing has long been an incredibly appealing career path, largely because it’s a skill that people are always going to require. Whether it’s domestic, commercial or industrial settings, plumbers remain a key part of the construction process, and their skills are highly sought after.
This means qualified plumbers are in a strong position when it comes to career progression and job security, and are often able to start their own business should they choose to go down the self-employed route.
Below, we’ve picked out a few of the key reasons why completing your plumbing training is worthwhile if you’ve been considering a career in the profession.
1. Hold the qualifications to work on site
Due to the materials and environments plumbers handle and work within, health and safety must be at the forefront of your training to protect both yourself and your potential clients.
Completing your training under the guidance of experienced tradespeople is also vital when it comes to upholding high standards in your work going forward.
For plumbers who want to work on-site, you’ll need to hold a CSCS Card. To register for this you’ll need to present a relevant qualification certificate and pass a health, safety and environment test (HS&E).
2. Become City & Guilds qualified in six weeks
The City & Guilds Level 2 Plumbing Course is ideal for those with no prior plumbing experience, or who may have a small amount of experience but require more in-depth technical knowledge. The course forms the basis for all modern domestic plumbing, can be completed in six weeks and is an industry-recognised, formal trade qualification.
3. Spread the cost of training
Able Skills plumbing courses can be paid for in manageable instalments, with just a deposit needed to begin your training.
4. Flexible learning options
Not everyone is in a position to complete a full-time training course, which is why we also offer many of our courses on a part-time basis. For example, the Level 2 Plumbing course can be completed at weekends.
5. Take advantage of high demand
As mentioned above, plumbing skills are always going to be required in any building project, which explains why the profession is the fourth most in-demand trade for 2022.
6. Opens the door to advanced learning
Upskilling is a great way to make your offering more appealing to employers and customers and upon completing a plumbing course there are a number of further learning opportunities. Water Regulations, Energy Efficiency and Hot Water Storage Systems are all valuable add-on qualifications. A common progression route for plumbers is to also train in gas, given the frequent crossovers between the two trades.
7. A varied day-to-day
Plumbers can enjoy a varied work life. One day you can be repairing a faulty dishwasher, the next you could be installing a brand-new, complex heating system in a new office.
Whether you’ve no prior plumbing experience, or have been in the industry for years and need a formal NVQ qualification, Able Skills offers a range of plumbing courses to suit all levels of experience.
