A number of council tenants renting residential properties in areas of Loughborough have been issued with court costs after they refused to allow gas safety workers to carry out essential gas safety checks in their homes.

A total of seven tenants refused to allow the workers, who had been sent by Charnwood Borough Council, to gain entry to their properties. This meant that the council, which is legally obliged to carry out gas safety checks on all rented properties that have at least one gas appliance such as a gas hob or a gas fire or boiler, were not able to meet their obligations.

Eventually, the borough council was forced to seek court injunctions to gain entry to the properties in order to carry out the essential safety work.
