Alarming Gas Research!
Some concerning statistics surrounding Gas Safety have just been released. Here at Able Skills we teach bespoke Gas courses that aim to turn novices into professional Gas Engineers that understand the health and safety surrounding the trade of gas...So we like to keep informed about the industry and what's going on in terms of regulations, news and information so that we can further expand our knowledge and the understanding of our students. Let's take a look at the statistics released by the Gas Safe Register and some insight into how to get started on the path towards becoming a Gas Engineer...
The research, which involved 3,000 UK adults, suggests that most people don’t realise that the effects of CO or Carbon Monoxide exposure may not be severe. Only one in five (20%) respondents said they’d be aware of a carbon monoxide leak in their home if they felt unwell, as opposed to seriously unwell...This is extremely concerning when looking at the other statistics released. The research also suggests that over 80% of UK adults could be at risk of mistaking carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms for a different illness such as a cold, flu, or hangover. 20% of those surveyed said they always stop using a faulty gas appliance until it is fixed and just 42% get their gas appliances serviced every year by a Gas Safe-registered engineer. That means that 80% of people would continue to use an appliance they know is faulty which could lead to fatal exposure to CO!
This research is shocking and for those of you who are currently working as Gas Engineers it is your duty to convey the relative information to your clients whilst on the job, please raise awareness when you can, otherwise people will simple not be aware of how dangerous gas can be. For those of you that are considering a career as a Gas Engineer do not take the health and saftey aspects of this trade lightly, there is a reason that the Gas Safe Register is in place!
