Always ask a Gas Engineer for ID!
There have recently been some concerning new stories recently surrounding 'Gas Engineers' or rather people protecting to be. We are a training centre who are proud of the gas courses that we provide and we try our best to ensure that the aspiring engineers that we train understand the industry and the requirements of you as an individual. When hiring a Gas Engineer for their services it is important to ask to see their Gas Safe Register Card, you should have no hesitation asking an engineer to see their ID, you as a customer have every right to ask!
Why is this important?
This is important as it is a legal requirement here in the UK to be registered with the Gas Safe Register when carrying out any work to do with gas. Most engineers are working safely and legally, however, there are and will always be people trying to avoid the legal path. For example, a self-employed property maintenance contractor has been sentenced recently after arranging and being in control of gas work that his contractors were not registered or competent to do, leaving it in a dangerous condition. This situation could have been avoided by checking the legitimacy of the engineer. Once you have seen the card the most important things to check is the expiry date and the licence number which can be checked online on the Gas Safe Register's' website. Additionally, on the back of these cards will be a list of appliances and tasks that the engineer is qualified to work with.
