You would have thought rogue traders out there would have learnt by now! Clearly not. Another rogue trader has been sentenced to prison after pretending he was a Gas Safe Registered Engineer when doing work for a client in Sheffield.
The case actually dates back to 2013 - 2014 when the tradesmen prosecuted carried out gas work on 2 properties around Yorkshire without having clearly attended any Gas Training Courses or ACS Exams. What caused concern for the resident was the fact that there were faults with the gas installation work done such as, gas fittings and defective flue joints, which created serious health and safety issues for the homeowners.
Some People Never Learn!
What is interesting and should be a lesson for those undergoing Gas Training Courses or any other Gas Courses, is the fact that the defendant has previously been given a Prohibition Notice which automatically bans a person from undergoing any gas work until they have successfully passed the necessary training and qualifications.
Despite being warned, an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive discovered that the same 'wanabe' Gas Engineer made the same mistake again after carrying out more unsafe gas work for another 2 properties in South Yorkshire. What a big mistake that was as the man responsible was handed a 12 month sentence!
The so called Gas Engineer pleaded guilty to the following charges:
- 5 charges/offences of Regulation 3(3) of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998
- 3 charges/offences of Regulation 3(7) of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998
- 1 charge/offence each of Regulation 6(3) and Regulation 26(5) of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998
- 1 charge/offence under Section 33(1)(g) of the Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974.
HSE inspector Jane Fox commented:
“(the defendant) undertook gas work which he knew he was not registered to do. Some of that work was unsafe and it was fortunate that no one was harmed.”
“All gas work must be done by registered Gas Safe engineers to ensure the highest standards are met to prevent injury and loss of life.”
“The public should always ask to see the gas engineer’s identification and check the registration number or ring the Gas Safe Register customer helpline 0800 408 5500”.
The average person may not understand the dangers unsafe gas work can lead to, but it's safe to say that those in the industry certainly do. With the amount of fatalities and incidents there have been, it's no wonder why the penalties are as steep as they are.
If you're looking to get into gas work, please do it the safe and legal way by undergoing Gas Training Courses first! If you want to come back and enroll on further Gas Courses after, please do so! Just make sure you're legit!
