A young carpenter has earned praise from Nick Clegg after winning the title of 'Apprentice of the Year'.
Adam Elvin impressed his bosses at Bovis Homes so much that he was named On Site Bristol's Apprentice of the Year and attended a reception with the deputy prime minister.
The 21-year-old's success was recognised by Nick Clegg at a reception at Admiralty house in London. Mr Clegg said: "Apprentices not only make an invaluable contribution to their employer, but to the economy as a whole, and I was delighted to welcome Adam to Admiralty House in recognition of this.
"We’ve seen a record number of businesses clamouring to take on apprentices and that’s because they know what a huge difference the talent and ambition they bring can make.
"We’re also making it simple and rewarding for companies to take on apprentices – from mechanics to the hospitality trade," the Deputy Prime Minister added.
Adam joined apprentices from across the UK at the celebration which sought to showcase the contribution apprenticeships can make to the country's economy. His enthusiasm for apprenticeships has led Adam on a tour of Bristol schools to speak about his experiences.
He explained: "I looked at college courses but decided that an apprenticeship through On Site Bristol was the right thing for me.
"It’s been a great opportunity and I really enjoyed learning a skill through practical, on-the-job training. I really recommend it to any young person who wants to get a first step in their career."
Adam's bosses have agreed to support the young carpenter through higher education in site-management, Bovis Homes South West managing director Malcolm Pink said: "We are looking to get young people into construction, instil a strong work ethic in them and teach them skills that will set them up for life.
"Adam is a great example of how apprenticeships really work and open the door to a successful and fulfilling career. Through our apprenticeship scheme we are aiming to recruit future site managers and business managers, special individuals who have shown an ability to learn and commitment to the business."
