Be aware of the amendment - 18th Edition
Last month we talked about the recent update or amendment to the 18th Edition. The changes were in response to the EV car charging market and the ever increasing amount of electric cars. With big changes such as the UK governments announcement to bring forward its ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars to 2035 which reflects the government’s ambitions to reach its net zero emissions target by 2050 - There is a need for an update in regulation. However, the update does not mean that people who have completed electrician courses similar to our 18th Edition courses have to re-sit, in fact, this amendment means electrical contractors will not be required to retake their courses in order to be able to carry out work in line with the new amendment...So it is important to be aware of the update and do your own research especially if you plan on installing chargers in the future!
What is the 18th Edition?
The 18th Edition also known as the wiring regulations, BS 7671 or simply the regs are the official rules for electrical installations and act as the industry standards for health and safety when it comes to working with any kind of electrical system. Without knowledge of these regulations you may find it hard to secure work with large companies and agencies, as they most likely will require that electricians working with them have this qualification as an entry requirement. Our 18th Edition courses, for example, are aimed at providing you with a detailed understanding of how to find the information you need in the book itself and how to turn those regulations into applicable changes to the way you carry out installations over a 3-day period and are completed via an open-book online exam taken in our dedicated exam room.
What is the amendment?
The recent amendment is solely focused on laying out the regulations for the installation of electric car charging points both within public spaces and within peoples homes. With the growing market for electric vehicles there is an opportunity for electricians to profit by installing charging points within people's properties, however there needs to be rules in place to ensure that all installations are safe and are working in accordance to the industry standard and that is there this update comes into play! - The amendment is free to download from the IET website or available to purchase as a hard copy, includes changes on supplying EV charging points outside on PME (Protective Multiple Earthing arrangements).
