Become a well-rounded Tradeswoman
Today we caught up with one of our returning students on the Introduction to Carpentry course. We thought it would be a good idea to see how a carpentry student is getting on and find out what her first impressions are of not just the centre, but of the course itself!
Here at Able Skills, we offer a range of courses in the line of construction from plastering to bricklaying and everything in between. Sometimes we get students who come here for specific reasons. Sometimes for a spot of DIY, renovating houses and even starting their own business.
Working in retail can be tiring and limited. That's why whilst working at Laura Ashley as a sales advisor in Orpington Nicola thought she could take her previous level 3 in interior design further and get involved. Now working for herself she helps people realise their dreams and gets the job done!
Getting women involved in trades is really important and great to see, diversity in the construction industry needs improvement. The number of men and women in this line of work will take a long time to equal out, it has been a male-dominated sector forever. Nicola Is a great inspiration to women not simply due to being involved in the industry but she's taking the power into her own hands as a female business owner!
She’s got off to a great start in her first year in the industry! Even going as far as appearing on DIY SOS on BBC 1 back in October 2018 with our very own Able Skills tiling instructor Terry!
Getting started:
It all started at Able Skills, firstly in October last year, with a City & Guilds Painting & Decorating course. This 5-week course is perfect for those looking for a start in this industry, the course involves and reflects the realities of the most common aspects of Painting & Decorating.
"I’ve been really pleased with the tuition I have received at Able Skills. All the lecturers are very experienced and knowledgable which helps to give you confidence when starting out on your own." - Nicola (NEB Interiors)
January this year, she decided to expand her skill-set and try a hand in plastering with an Introduction to Plastering course. But now currently on her second day of another introduction course, this June, we find Nicola in the carpentry centre taking on a 5-day City & Guilds Certificated Introductory Carpentry course.
Here is a list of the different trades we cover:
