It's getting cold outside, take care of your boiler!
It's getting colder outside as the days go by and around this time of year the one thing you don't need to break is your boiler. British Gas have forecast 110,000 boiler breakdowns across the next fortnight as we attempt to heat up our homes. Today we will look at some quick tips when you're fearful of a boiler fault, what to keep in mind when hiring a Gas Engineer and how to get involved with Gas training courses!
Firstly, if you haven’t used your heating for a while, air can enter the system and form bubbles at the top of your radiators, which stops them from working efficiently. To bleed your radiator is to sort of reset it, to do this turn a radiator key in the valve at the top to let the air out. Be careful of any drips, make sure to put something down underneath the appliance before you do this such as a towel.
Another great tip is to get your boiler checked even if you think that it is working in perfect condition, boilers should be inspected regularly anyway. Call up a local Gas Engineer and he will be able to assist you, however, when hiring a Gas Engineer some people are not aware that you should always check their ID. Gas is the only trade where all workers have to be registered to a governing body, it used to be called CORGI but these days it's known as the Gas Safe Register...It is illegal for somebody to carry out gas work without being registered to this body. Don't be afraid to ask for a Gas Engineers card, it is a legal requirement for them to show you if requested - check for the date to see if the card is valid and secondly look for the licence number it will be a 7-digit number! You can type this into the Gas Safe Register's website to check their legitimacy - www.gassaferegister.co.uk
Gas training:
Gas courses here at Able Skills are very intense courses and aim to give you an overall level of skill both in a theoretical sense and in the practical skill itself. Our New Entrant Gas Training Package 2 is the most popular package that we offer as it includes all of the elements in preparation for Gas Safe Registration. 7-weeks of training, portfolio completion and ACS assessments! We now have availability in February 2020! We will also be putting up some part-time dates in October!
How do I become Gas Safe Registered?
An ACS will need to be completed before you are eligible for Gas Safe registration and this is a requirement for all operatives involved in the installation, maintenance and servicing of domestic gas appliances and pipe-work installations. Also, every Gas Safe registered business renews their registration on an annual basis and updates their qualifications every 5 years, meaning you will need to refresh your memory on gas safety every 5-years! You can apply online, they have made it as simple and easy as possible - applying costs around £362 - do not try to avoid becoming registered because ultimately you will be found out!
