The self-build industry is in healthy shape, according to one industry source, which could lead to employment opportunities for engineers who have completed plumbing courses.
Jaclyn Thorburn, communications manager at BuildStore, pointed out that there are increasing numbers of finance options for people who choose to carry out construction work themselves.
Technicians with plumbing course qualifications could be called in for home improvements, conversions, renovations, or even building a house from scratch.
Ms Thorburn explained: "With more lenders coming into the market, and an increasing capacity to lend to self-builders, the market is looking good - currently up to 90 per cent borrowing is possible."
She noted that it is currently on the government's agenda to build up the self-build industry, with the coalition keen to emulate the construction levels seen in the rest of Europe.
Research by BuildStore released this week showed the number of mortgage offers of this type has seen a year-on-year jump of 30 per cent in the three months to April.
