Carpentry is one of the oldest trades around and it is a trade that will never be replaced by machine. Carpenters are always busy at work, either on-site or in people’s homes and they are always in high demand.
Many experienced Carpenters, which have been working in the industry for years, will not be able to get on-site without the correct CSCS card. This is vital for Carpenters to have this card because they will only be granted access to work on-site if they can show a valid CSCS card in their chosen trade.
Experienced Carpenters are being encouraged to gain an NVQ Level 2 to be able to apply for CSCS card so they can work on-site. This is all down to the shortage of skilled workers that are able to complete building work to the right standard.
At Able Skills we offer an Experienced Worker route that allows experienced Carpenters to gain an NVQ, providing they can prove they have been working as a Carpenter for a least the last five years and can show they have the right set of skills.

This is known as the quickest and cheapest route to gaining an NVQ, if you are an experienced Carpenter. The Carpenters will have a profiling with one of our assessors, where they will be asked a series of questions and be asked to provide five years’ worth of evidence from them working as a Carpenter. Once the assessor is happy with the evidence you have produced, you will then come in for a practical assessment to prove your skills and capabilities as a Carpenter.
However, to prove your skills, you need to be able to show capabilities across the board in carpentry and not just in one particular area. On-site you will be expected to carry out a range of different carpentry tasks, this is why the NVQ covers all areas of carpentry.
This is also known as the EWPA (Experienced Worker Practical Assessment), this has been designed by the CITB to create a fast route to gain an NVQ for experienced Carpenters. With no site assessments required, it is the quickest and cheapest route available to achieve the NVQ Level 2 for Carpenters with over five years of experience.
