Here at Able Skills we have been teaching Gas training courses for many years and like to keep up with what's happening in the industry. Recent developments mean that British homeowners will have to replace their conventional gas boilers with potentially more expensive and greener alternatives under a radical plan being drawn up by Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s officials. Calling for an overall ban on fossil fuel boilers from 2025. What does this mean for the public and Gas Engineers?
For Gas Engineers currently working out in the industry this only means that there will be more work out there. Replacing a gas boiler with a heat pump for example is a job that you can do in a single day, with the right skills and experience. There is already a high demand in terms of greener alternatives to traditional boilers. The move to make this regulation only increases that demand, meaning more opportunities to earn in the trade.
For homeowners, selling their homes, or carrying out significant renovations, they would need to make sure their heating systems comply with tougher new environmental standards. To meet these new standards, homeowners will likely need to replace a gas boiler with a heat pump, which can typically cost more than £10,000!
Why the change?
Well, if we are to meet the goal of achieving “net zero” by 2050 there needs to be regulations like this in place to speed up the process and reach the target. Overall homes across the UK are one of the largest contributors to harmful emissions. In fact, the residential sector accounted for 20.8% of all U.K. carbon dioxide emissions in 2020, according to data published earlier this year, and making domestic heating greener is key to meeting the government’s climate goals.
