Renewable energy courses could be set for increased interest after energy and climate change secretary Chris Huhne suggested raising carbon emission targets.

Responding to the release of the EU Commission's 2050 Low Carbon Roadmap report, the MP claimed there is a case for raising Europe's current 20 per cent target for green power in 2020 to 30 per cent.

Mr Huhne stressed the importance of job creation within the UK's environmental strategy, which could prompt more technicians to take renewable energy courses in preparation for new opportunities.

"The 2050 Low Carbon Roadmap must be a first step towards Europe setting a clear, cost-effective and ambitious plan to decarbonise its economy," he added.

In his view, it is important that the UK reduces its dependence on fossil fuels.

This week, the coalition government unveiled a new Carbon Plan, which set out key goals relating to the way electricity is generated, homes are heated and people travel.
