Throughout our Student Success Stories series, we’ve heard all kinds of incredible journeys that Able Skills students have gone on following their studies.
Whether they’ve gone on to launch their own construction business, gained the qualifications needed to begin working on site or simply learned the skills to complete a personal DIY project, each story is completely unique and we’re always fascinated to hear them.
Our latest conversation saw us catching up with Hollie Riley, who completed her Level 2 Plumbing, Gas and Water Regulations qualifications with Able Skills, and who now works as a commissioning manager in the construction industry.
We asked Hollie about her studies, her first steps out in the field and for a few key pieces of advice she’d give to students in the same position she was in a few years ago, back when she first began her training.
Can you describe your typical working day?
“Working in construction, my typical working day is never typical. I could be working onsite, visiting other sites or based in the office.”
What do you enjoy most about your current role?
“The flexibility and freedom to control my own diary.”
How big a part did your training period play in getting you where you are today?
“My training has been crucial and I wouldn’t be where I am today without it.”
What were your first steps upon completing your training course? Would you have done anything differently?
“Upon completing my plumbing training four years ago, I jumped straight in with a company and into construction sites.
“The only thing I would have done differently is looking where I wanted to take my career long term, possibly planning further ahead and having additional training at the time.”
If you could give three pieces of advice to a student currently training for your profession, what would they be?
“Don’t be afraid to stand out.
“You will constantly learn every day so don’t expect to know everything straight away.
“Build your social circle, knowing people will help you.”
Growing your skill set with continued training
Hollie is a great example of how continued training is a worthwhile investment when working in construction. Building a more specialist knowledge of your industry, along with a wider variety of skills, may make you more appealing to both employers and potential customers.
More specifically, in Hollie’s case, combining a plumbing qualification with gas training is a perfect way to blend two complementary skill sets, given the frequent crossover between industries.
Whether you’re looking to pursue further training to add to your existing skill set, or are ready to take your first steps towards a career in construction, Able Skills offers a wide variety of expert-led courses to suit all levels of experience. We recommend popping into our training centre for a chat, but if you can’t make it in, give us a call on 01322 280 202 and our team would be happy to advise.
