Decorating is a skill that goes very well together with most other trades, including carpentry, plumbing, electrics and plastering, as it is helpful to be able to provide a good, tidy finish after completing a project. It is also a very good skill to learn for those with an interest in DIY, as it will help to enhance and improve their finished project.

A good starting point for those who have not had a lot of decorating experience, and have not studied decorating before, is to enrol on a short introductory course, for example for five days. Introductory decorating courses aim to provide students with good background knowledge of many of the most important decorating tasks. They are particularly useful for those who wish to learn how to decorate properly, purely for DIY.

Those who wish to progress with decorating qualifications in order to be an attractive tradesman will benefit from an advanced painting and decorating course that may run over some five days, or a City & Guilds Painting and Decorating Certificate, which lasts for five weeks. There is the option for further progression, as those who are successful in obtaining the certificate can then go on to study an NVQ Level 2 in decorating.

Decorators are often asked if they are able to do tiling as part of their work, therefore tiling courses can help them to gain more work from customers who have larger projects, for example complete refurbishments.
