Training in painting and decorating is preferable if people are going to do DIY, but for people who are yet to undertake classes, caution is advisable.
Fiona Hodge, assistant editor of DIY Week, has suggested that people should make sure that they know their limits.
"A lot of people at the moment seem to be calling on professionals anyway, that is something we have noticed," he said.
However, for those who are not getting professional help, she advises that "know[ing] your limits" is important.
"Make sure you are prepared for the job you are doing," Ms Hodge added.
According to FindaProperty.com, a fifth or Brits are planning to do some DIY home improvements this August bank holiday weekend.
Just over two thirds were planning on spending less than £100 on materials and tools, with 96 per cent of people doing DIY planning on paint jobs.
Hanging wallpaper was the next popular task, followed by improving the garden and rewiring electrics.
