Given just how vital health and safety is within the gas industry, anyone wanting to build a career in the sector must complete rigorous training and assessments before being able to join the Gas Safe Register — a legal requirement for anyone undertaking any kind of gas work.
There are different routes to becoming a gas engineer, with traditional apprenticeships and private training providers two of the most common pathways. Whichever method you choose, it’s vital you pick a trusted provider given the hazardous and even fatal consequences of unsafe gas work.
Given the frequent crossovers between the two industries, a common question is whether a person needs to be qualified in plumbing before beginning their gas training.
While plumbers going on to train in gas is a common progression route, there is absolutely no need for a person to have trained in the plumbing industry before starting on their gas qualifications.
Where to start with gas training
If you’re a complete newcomer to the industry, it’s important that you understand exactly what level of qualification is required for the kind of work you wish to take on. For example, different qualifications are needed depending on whether you work in a domestic or commercial setting.
To become qualified, you must complete an industry-recognised qualification such as an NVQ, or a Managed Learning Programme (MLP) with an accredited training provider.
Once this initial training is complete, you’ll need to find a work placement and compile your gas portfolio. While working under the supervision of a Gas Safe engineer, you’ll gather evidence that you can safely perform various kinds of gas work.
Once your portfolio includes all the necessary requirements, you’ll need to complete an Accredited Certification Scheme (ACS) before being able to join the Gas Safe Register. Different kinds of ACS assessments are in place for domestic and commercial engineers.
What if I am already working as a plumber?
For those already working in the plumbing industry looking to expand their skill set and the services they can offer to customers, obtaining gas qualifications is ab obvious progression.
Since many plumbing skills transfer directly over to gas, streamlined MLPs are available to speed up this process. When enrolling in one of these courses, participants will complete a short assessment to determine skills and competency, potentially reducing the number of required Guided Learning Hours (GLH).
At Able Skills, we offer gas training courses to suit all levels of ability and experience. Our in-depth New Entrant package covers everything you’ll need to go from complete beginner to the level required for Gas Safe registration, while our Gas Training Course for Plumbers is perfect for those already working in the plumbing sector who want to expand their skill set.
If you’d like any more information about either course, then do feel free to give us a call on 01322 280 202, or drop by the centre and we’d be happy to answer any questions.
