Whatever construction trade you specialise in, having a clear understanding of the training and qualifications you need is vital when it comes to protecting yourself and those around you.

For those working in the plastering sector, one of the key certifications you might want to consider pursuing is your CSCS card.

Why would plasterers need CSCS cards?

For any plasterer wanting to work on a UK construction site, holding a CSCS card is now a mandatory requirement. Naturally, having the ability to work on site can significantly increase the scope of work a plasterer is able to take on.

Can anyone apply for a CSCS card?

Before applying for a CSCS card, plasterers must have completed an NVQ qualification (or equivalent) with an accredited construction training provider.

The only exception to this is in the case of trainee or apprentice plasterers who may be granted a red CSCS card — this is seen as a temporary measure which allows an individual to gain site experience while completing their formal training.

As part of the CSCS application process, plasterers must also complete a Health, Safety and Environment test.

What if I already have experience in the industry, but no formal qualifications?

It’s not uncommon for experienced plasterers to have learned on the job rather than completing formal training. Since the CSCS does require an NVQ, many construction training providers offer NVQ profiling assessments aimed at plasterers already working in the industry who now need a CSCS card.

Are there different kinds of CSCS cards for plasterers?

Different levels of CSCS cards are available, each granting different levels of responsibility when working on a construction site.

These range from entry-level green cards for general labourers, which require a Level 1 qualification, to the CSCS gold card, held by those working in a supervisory role and which requires the individual to hold a formal Level 3 qualification.
