A planning application has been submitted to build a new sports complex in west Lancashire that could provide work for engineers who have completed electrical courses in the area.

The document was handed in by planning consultancy Turley Associates on behalf of Edge Hill University in Ormskirk, with vice-chancellor of the school Steve Igoe saying the facility will help the higher education provider stay competitive.

West Lancashire Council will now consider whether to permit the construction of a sports and recreation centre including swimming, tennis and athletics facilities, as well as several multi-purpose indoor and outdoor pitches.

"This investment in the Ormskirk campus will ensure the university continues to enhance and develop all aspects of the student experience, particularly the quality of the campus," added Mr Igoe.

Last week, Edge Hill University announced that 61.6 per cent of its students achieved an upper second class or first class degree, which is a record for the centre.
