Tens of thousands of students have embarked on electrical courses across Britain due to the after-effects of the recent economic downturn, new figures released by City & Guilds have suggested.

According to the organisation, 97,411 people joined electrical courses over the last 12 months, while the number of individuals joining vocational learning schemes climbed by 11 per cent.

"Growing numbers of people are recognising the value of work-related learning and equipping themselves with the right skills and training they need to succeed and lead in today's fast-paced economy," said City & Guilds chief executive Chris Jones.

He claimed that demand for electrical courses has "never been higher" and expressed hope that with the jobs market becoming increasingly competitive, the government will continue to provide support for work-based learning.
