Tradespersons who have taken electrical training courses could find that they are needed for a scheme organised by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Technology Strategy Board.
A £1.2 million research fund has been allocated by the two bodies to give to energy companies to develop, test and produce innovative, energy-efficient lighting products.
Firms will get access to the financing if successful in a Small Business Research Initiative competition.
Environment minister Dan Norris commented that the initiative could be extremely beneficial.
"Moving towards a more sustainable, low carbon and resource efficient future is vital for our environment, but also offers great opportunities for economic growth and job creation," he said.
As a result, workers with approved electrical qualifications could find that their employment opportunities are boosted, with accredited tradespersons needed to fit the new lighting.
Defra is headed by Hilary Benn, who is the secretary of state for environment, food and rural affairs.
