Workers who have completed electrician training courses might find themselves in demand as a result of plans to invest in Newcastle's grade-II listed Byker estate.
The iconic site was built between 1969 and 1982, is home to close to 10,000 people and was designed to encouraged social interaction among its residents.
According to Communities and Local Government, proposals have been outlined by housing minister John Healey to inject £48 million into the land, for the redesigning of homes and creation of improved employment opportunities for local people.
The minister wants to make the space more energy efficient by installing new green technology such as solar panels - which could increase the demand for workers with approved electrical qualifications to help implement the plans.
Commenting on the announcement, Mr Healey said: "The Byker estate is internationally acclaimed for its innovative and community-led design, and I want to see that continue."
