What is happening in the industry?
Currently, the average electrician earns around £33,000 a year here in the UK. This amount changes completely when you factor in experience, type of work, type of employment, skill level and things like hours worked. Yet the overall average is on the rise. As restrictions have been lifted, many construction projects have been resumed and domestic jobs are high in demand. The problem is there are not enough skilled workers out there to fill those positions. So, the cost of hiring an electrician has gone up.
Additionally, there is new demand for green installations. As the demand for new houses continues to grow and smart home installations increase, the need for businesses to invest in the next generation of electricians could not be clearer. Those gaining new skills within the industry will benefit from this earnings increase the most as there is a smaller percentage of electricians with the knowledge and skills to complete these smart installations.
Additionally, the lack of skilled professions is affecting the demand. There is an obvious correlation between experience and earnings. However as electricians retire there is not enough skilled people taking there place. This is known as the skills-gap which means all electricians experience an increase in pay.
