Young people have been urged to look out for jobs where they may be offered training opportunities, such as the chance to complete gas courses.
Chief executive of People 1st Brian Wisdom explained that there are plenty of opportunities for school leavers to find work in the UK, despite the tough economic outlook.
In his opinion, youngsters do not need to panic about finding employment and should aim to secure a role in which they will be given the opportunity to learn new skills and gain qualifications, such as gas courses for engineers.
"I think the sort of employer that people should be looking for are employers who are actually going to provide training opportunities," he said.
Mr Wisdom's comments were made in response to remarks by the University and College Union, in which a spokesperson suggested many GCSE students could find it hard to secure a place at college as a result of a shortage of higher education options in the UK.
