First steps when looking to be a Domestic Electrician
Looking to become an electrician but don't know how or where to start? When looking into becoming an electrician you may want to take an introductory course such as our Introduction to Basic Domestic Electrics for the purpose of getting to grips with the fundamentals but also a short-course like this gives you an opportunity to discover if you enjoy the trade and whether or not you could see yourself carrying out these tasks professionally. Switching careers is important and it would be counter productive to commit to a long-term course focused on a trade that you are not sure you want to peruse. So, today we will be looking at what you will learn during out introduction course and which electrician courses to take if you are confident you want to expand your knowledge and potentially kick-start a successful career!
Our Introduction:
Here at our training centre we offer a 10-day course that is perfect when looking to get a taste of the trade! The course is taught by our talented, expert instructors who have expansive knowledge on the trade as a whole. They will guide you the entire way through a mixture of both classroom-based teaching and practical experience out in our workshop as you achieve a basic understanding of domestic electrics and understand what you can and cannot do within a domestic dwelling. Over the duration of the course we will aim to give you a solid foundation on a range of subjects including the following...
- The definition of electric shock
- Ohms Law & Power Triangles
- Identification of earthing systems
- An introduction to legislation surrounding electrical installation in dwellings
- Understanding breaker and cable selection
- Installation of earthing and bonding, Ring circuits, Radial circuits, Cooker circuits, various lighting circuits.
- Completion of installation certificate
- Safe isolation
- Adding additional outlets to a circuit
- Completion of a minor works certificate
- Understanding basic inspection and testing:

- Continuity of protective conductors
- Continuity of protective conductors radial circuits
- Continuity of protective conductors ring final circuits
- Insulation resistance
- Polarity
Additionally, towards the end of the course we will also expand on these fundamental topics and look at strengthening your understanding of an electrical installation and any implications the installation may have with regards to the Building Regulations. As well as the list of topics above we will also cover the practical application of electrical installation in bathrooms, showers and garden areas. The training therefore also covers the following aspects...
- Applicable Building Regulations
- Electrical safety, legislation, regulations, standards & terminology.
- Installation of a garden security light incorporating SWA
- Inspecting, testing and commissioning a domestic single phase circuit.
- Special locations and installations
- Pre-work survey inspection
- Basic understanding of 3 phase

So, you've taken our Introduction to Basic Domestic Electrics and you are excited to learn more...Then there is no better choice when aiming to become a domestic installer than our Domestic Electrical Part-P Package - This is the perfect combination of electrician courses in preparation for a competent persons scheme. This package will give you training, qualifications, skills and knowledge to enable you to register on to a domestic installer scheme in order to be able to self-certify your work and will introduce you to some very essential topics such as the latest wiring regulations also known as 18th Edition. Which is a requirement for not only electrician but for everybody involved in any kind of installation and or maintenance of electrical systems. You will also take on Level 2 Fundamental Inspection and Testing which not only helps you to fully understand testing, it also provides you with a qualification and certificate to show you are competent to undertake the work.
