A new report has highlighted the need for tradesmen who have completed plumbing courses to be hired to bring thousands of homes in Leeds up to a decent standard.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, there are about 58,000 council houses in the city and the majority are certified satisfactory in terms of their electrics, plumbing, boiler systems and heating.

However, the publication noted that 1,931 are currently in some state of disrepair and Leeds no longer qualifies to receive funding from the Decent Homes initiative, so money is not available to hire the trained professionals - who may have taken plumbing courses and other industry qualifications - to remedy any issues.

"We have got to look at the funding we have got in our budgets to see what we can do for these homes," a Leeds City Council spokeswoman told the newspaper.

Council housing in the Yorkshire city is looked after by four different groups - East North East Homes Leeds, Aire Valley Homes Leeds, West North West Homes Leeds and Belle Isle Tenant Management Organisation.
