Tradespersons who have approved gas qualifications could be needed to assist the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) with its new campaign.
According to body, its Carbon monoxide - will you wake up? initiative has been launched in the south-west of England in conjunction with the University of Plymouth and aims to alert students to the dangers of the gas.
HSE inspector Helena Allum commented that the organisation is trying to make sure student accommodation has alarms fitted.
"Carbon monoxide is a silent, odourless but deadly killer and the simple processing of fitting an audible alarm could save lives," she said.
She added that it is essential that a Gas Safe Registered engineer carries out any gas work within a home or property.
Carbon monoxide caused around 234 injuries last year alone and kills 15 to 20 people annually.
It prevents oxygen reaching cells, organs and tissues and poisoning by the gas can be caused by ill-fitted appliances or poorly maintained flues.
