Tradespersons who have taken gas training courses could help save lives after details of a new national campaign were announced.
An initiative called Be Alarmed! was launched back in October 2008 by the Energy Retail Association on behalf of the Carbon Monoxide Consumer Awareness Alliance, which aims to cut down on the number of deaths and injuries caused as a result of carbon monoxide exposure.
Despite the awareness-raising campaign, around 30 people are poisoned by the gas and consequently die each year.
For this reason, carbon monoxide expert Dr Rob Hicks thinks this is still a major issue and offered some tips on how to avoid falling ill as a result of the gas.
"You can minimize the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning by making sure that your fuel burning appliances are checked at least every year," he told DirectGov.
Such advice could highlight the importance of gas workers and provide increased work opportunities to those who have taken gas training courses.
