If you already have experience in the electrical industry but need additional qualifications, find out how you can achieve that with Able Skills.

If you are already working in the electrical industry or trained previously but for whatever reason you didn't gain the required formal qualifications, training with a private provider can help.
Even individuals who originally started an electrical apprenticeship or college course don’t always complete them successfully. There are also individuals who don’t have the level of qualification that they need to get the jobs they want.
How can I get qualified as an electrician?
Doing electrician training courses through a provider such as Able Skills can give you the opportunity to formalise the knowledge, experience and skills you already have and allow you to gain industry-recognised qualifications that you need.
The electrician training courses and electrical qualifications include:
- Level 2 Electrical City & Guilds 2365-02
- Level 3 Electrical City & Guilds 2365-03
- 18th Edition City & Guilds 2382-22 (BS 7671:2022)
- Inspection and Testing Course City & Guilds 2391
- NVQ Level 3 City & Guilds 2357
- AM2 assessment
We see many students who are already working in the industry. Perhaps they’ve worked and lived overseas and want to work in the UK. They may have been working as an electrician apprentice or doing supervised work as that’s what their qualifications allow. There might be gaps in their qualifications. They want to apply for jobs that require them to be a fully qualified electrician.
Feedback on our electrician training courses
I would really recommend. I have no complaints at all with my time at able skills, I managed to finish off my level 2 electrical after years of not doing it, and successfully achieved my 18th edition. I’m looking forward to studying my level 3 and the rest of my qualifications next year.

I’d highly recommend Ableskills for anyone looking to start or advance in the electrical sector, or for anyone who needs to go back a retrain – highly recommend!

What is a fully qualified approved electrician?
The JIB Gold Card is good marker for fully qualified ‘approved electrician’. This level of qualification requires a Level 3 NVQ or equivalent in an electrotechnical field.
What’s the fastest route to getting fully qualified as an electrician?
At Able Skills, the initial learning period of the Gold Card Approved Electrician package takes around 14 weeks to complete. The timings for your NVQ and AM2 assessments vary as these are done once you’re working in the industry.
If you already have a level 2 in electrical
If you already have level 2, you can take a level 3 electrical course as the next step.
If you already have a level 2 and experience
If you are an experienced worker and you have a minimum of 5 years of experience working as an electrician, then pursuing an NVQ level 3 qualification via the experienced worker assessment route might be an option.
