Homeowners have been urged to call in a professional who has taken plumbing courses if they are faced with the prospect of a daunting home improvement task, it has been claimed.

About Property recommended that people do not ring the first tradesman they see advertised in the phone book and instead choose one based on their skill and experience.

The online resource noted that many DIY tasks, such as fitting a new heater, can be more easily managed by a technician trained to carry out such procedures, which may have involved plumbing courses.

It added: "There is also the possibility that you may botch the job if attempting to do it yourself and consequently have to call out a plumber."

The website pointed out that people should ask tradesmen how they charge for their time and whether their price includes materials.

This week, the Liverpool Daily Post encouraged homeowners to hire a plumber who has spent some time working in the area, as they may know the heating systems better.
