The government has been called upon to offer an employment boost for those on bricklaying courses by committing more resources to building houses.
According to the Home Builders Federation (HBF), every property built in the UK creates an average of 1.5 jobs for those in the construction trade, with the number rising to around four across the entire supply chain.
Working in this capacity could also allow those on bricklaying courses to help solve a wider problem, as the HBF estimates that the UK is currently in need of around one million homes in order to meet demand.
The comments come in response to concerns expressed by the federation last week that budget cuts will place further strain on the nation's already undersupplied social housing provisions.
Steve Turner, a spokesman for the HBF, stated that it is therefore "vital" that the government does more to support the house-building sector.
He said: "The economic and social implications of not maintaining housing are quite clear."
