Whether you’re trying to add value to a property, or just feel like it’s time for a makeover, impressive bathroom refurbishments don’t have to break the bank.
There are plenty of quick, easy and affordable adjustments that can be made that will help breathe new life into any bathroom, many of which can be completed with just a handful of basic DIY skills.
It is worth noting, that if you’re undertaking work that requires specialist knowledge, such as fitting new plumbing systems or appliances, then hiring a qualified professional is likely more cost-efficient than potentially causing damage that may require an expensive emergency call-out.
Below, we’ve rounded up a few simple ideas for anyone wanting to complete their bathroom refurbishment on a budget.
Add a splash of colour
Tired of looking at all-white walls whenever you enter your bathroom? Subtle splashes of colour are an efficient way to make things a little more lively, all you need is a tin of paint and a bit of imagination.
If the ventilation is poor and your bathroom is prone to dampness, it may be worth considering mould and mildew inhibiting bathroom paint. In most cases though, regular satin, semi-gloss, or glossy finish paint is fine.
Make use of plants
Scattering a few potted plants around any room is enough to instantly transform it. The benefits stretch beyond just aesthetics too, with research finding that indoor plants have been shown to have a positive effect on mood, reduce stress, increase productivity and improve air quality.
Be sure to research what kinds of plants will flourish in the temperatures, lighting conditions and humidity of a bathroom. Bird’s Nest Fern, Pothos, Aloe Vera and Gardenia are just some of the species known to flourish in bathrooms.
Be tactical with mirrors and lighting
Better lighting can make a huge difference, making your bathroom look bright and vibrant. Pair this with tactically-placed mirrors to bounce the light around and you can quickly create a sense of significantly more space in smaller bathrooms.
Revamp don’t replace
Sprucing up existing fittings rather than replacing them entirely is an effective way to keep costs down.
For example, if ceramics have started to crack a resurfacing kit may be enough to have it looking as good as new again, while those with wooden floors could think about painting or staining to bring them back to life.
Use affordable materials
A great-looking bathroom is easily achievable without turning to expensive, luxury materials.
Vinyl flooring has come a long way and offers a cheaper alternative to expensive floor materials such as tiles and wood, it’s also easier to put down and replace. Likewise, using tiles across every wall will quickly add up, so consider getting creative with paint instead.
Second-hand materials like stone offcuts or reclaimed timber can create a chic, rustic finish, and shouldn’t make too big a dent in your wallet, if any. It’s also worth chancing your luck at car boot sales, or on Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree for potential hidden gems.
