Britons looking to further their career may want to enrol on an electrical course after an expert highlighted the value of skills and training to the economy.

A survey by the Association of Colleges recently showed that funding for adult learning in institutions across the country is being cut by an average of 16 per cent.

The organisation stated that it believes this could lead to 7,000 college staff losing their jobs, which may reduce the amount of support available for people trying to learn new skills.

Commenting on the figures, Dan Taubman, senior national education official at the University and College Union, said such spending cuts should not be allowed to happen.

"If we want people to have jobs we need [them] to have the skills to get jobs."

He added: "What employers say they are short of is the technical class of worker, at levels three and four."

Electrical courses could consequently become increasingly popular, after Mr Taubman went on to suggest the number of jobs that require qualifications has grown significantly over the last 30 years.
