With prospects for the construction industry looking positive in predicted output and activity, the sector offers an appealing route for those who might be considering a career in painting and decorating.

Current demand for painters and decorators in 2024

Following a strong first half of 2024, and with several major projects planned, including Labour’s ambitious home-building targets, there should be plenty of opportunities for those with sought-after trade skill sets going forward.

In its latest Industry Outlook Report, which forecasts the construction sector’s activity and job demand through 2024 - 2028, the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) predicts huge numbers of new talent will be needed to meet upcoming targets.

How will upcoming construction projects impact painters and decorators?

Given Labour’s promise to build 1.5 million new homes in the next five years, it’s fair to assume that the services of qualified painters and decorators will be in high demand due to these skills being essential to any homebuilding project.

Taking these plans into account, IBISWorld is predicting that the UK painting sector will grow throughout these five years, with the government’s efforts set to create promising tender opportunities for painting contractors, particularly those in the residential market.

Growing demand for female painters and decorators

Another encouraging sign for the industry is the growing demand for female painters, suggesting the sector is slowly moving away from archaic stereotypes and becoming more inclusive.

Industry experts at The Paint Shed (via Insight DIY), have analysed Google data, finding that searches for ‘Female Decorators Near Me’ have surged by 85%. When analysing the data on a regional basis, for example in Sheffield and Plymouth, this same search has grown by a massive 400%.

How much can painters and decorators earn?

The average wage of a painter and decorator will vary depending on several factors, in particular, location and experience.

According to Checkatrade, painters and decorators in full-time employment earn on average £34,320 per year. However, this earning potential increases significantly for sole traders, who can expect to earn on average £54,576, and even more so for limited company business owners, who can take up around £70,802.

What skills are needed for a career in painting and decorating?

Having high attention to detail is obviously a vital trait for painters and decorators to be successful in the industry. Good communication skills are also important when it comes to speaking to potential clients and working with others.

Being flexible will also serve you well — the construction industry can be fast-paced, so projects can move and change quickly, and having a clear understanding of health and safety is essential in protecting yourself and those around you.
