New job opportunities are to arise for bricklaying course attendees in Middlesbrough in 2010-11 thanks to a new schools construction project.

Clugston Construction has been awarded a £4 million contract by Middlesbrough Borough Council to overhaul the local Beechwood and Marton Grove schools, reports nebusiness.co.uk.

This project will involve the creation of new classrooms, replacement roofing and an external games area, as well as extensive general refurbishment.

According to the Humberside-based firm, the work has already commenced and will last until September of next year.

It is estimated that the project will create around 70 jobs for local residents.

Earlier this month, local business support organisation Constructing Excellence in the North East told nebusiness.co.uk that the building trade in the area is suffering from a shortage of skilled younger workers.

The body's chief executive Catriona Lingwood therefore suggested that young people who do choose to enter the trade will be helping both themselves and the wider industry.
