A construction industry commentator has suggested that a skilled workforce will be needed in the future, which will require training such as electrical courses.
Steve Turner, head of communications at the Home Builders Federation (HBF), called on the government to help fund the qualifications that workers will need in order to overcome challenges in the development of modern properties.
"If you look at house building, you have got a very challenging agenda including zero carbon homes that are going to need a skilled workforce," he said.
Mr Turner suggested the economic downturn has reduced the number of apprenticeships available and it is up to the government to work alongside the private sector to alter this situation.
The HBF representative stressed the construction sector also has to "help itself" with regards to the education of new recruits.
A recent statement by the Cross-industry Construction Apprenticeship Task Force noted that the transition to a low-carbon economy will require training to be affordable.
