A construction firm in the north east of England has invited staff from a local college onto one of its building sites.

Staff from the National Construction Academy at Newcastle College were invited to attend, in an effort to help them with their professional development, the Northern Echo reports.

Bob Warren, construction director at Whelan, the company behind the initiative, said: "We think it is important to be a location for site visits and it's extremely important students go on site visits.

"We appreciate that it is important that staff are always one step ahead when it comes to knowledge of advances in the industry."

He added that many have a good insight and some students are now looking to start apprenticeships on the site.

The members of staff were given a tour of the company's care home development and 42 affordable flats at Newcastle's Great Park.
