What is Inspection and Testing?
Inspection and Testing is what it sounds like, the inspection of installations to check for any issues or faults and testing is to check if the installation is in working order and functions as it should. This is a means of making sure that electrical installations are safe, in simple terms it is a safety check, all installations should be checked at regular intervals to ensure that they are in satisfactory condition for continued use. Periodic inspection and testing will depend on the type of location that you are working within and each type of building will have different regulations, for example, 10-years for an owner-occupied home, 5-years for privately rented accommodation and so on.
The skill itself, to use the necessary equipment should be part of every electrician's arsenal - A bread and butter skill. Periodic inspection and testing should be carried out only by electrically competent persons, such as registered electricians. They will check the condition of the electrics against the UK standard for the safety of electrical installations, BS 7671 – Requirements for Electrical Installations (IET Wiring Regulations).
