The need for people to seek the help of workers who have taken plumber training courses has been underlined by the new Connect Right campaign, the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (Ciphe) has said.
A variety of water and sewerage firms launched the initiative in conjunction with the Environment Agency, including Water UK, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Consumer Council for Water.
It aims to cut down on the amount of dirty water going from household appliances into nearby streams and rivers as a result of badly-connected plumbing.
Commenting on the campaign, chief executive of Ciphe Blane Judd said that it "helps bring such important issues to the attention of the general public and would urge anyone who is concerned about connections in their home or business to get them checked out by a qualified plumbing professional".
Established in 1906, Ciphe is the professional body for the British plumbing and heating industry.
