Workers who have taken a plumbing training course could find that they are in demand to fit-out new council homes that are to be delivered in Scotland.

It was announced yesterday (February 9th) that some £25 million is to be made available for local authorities in the country to build council houses, adding to the £50 million already invested in council housing since April 2009.

They will be asked to submit applications for funding by the end of April this year.

Commenting on the news, minister for housing and communities Alex Neil said that local councils have "enthusiastically embraced" the chance to apply for funding to help improve housing in Scotland.

"They are working with us to deliver more affordable homes and in doing so, encouraging development that chimes with the key themes of our Economic Recovery Plan," he said.

It was also recently revealed that ten new affordable homes in the Shetland Islands are set to be constructed by April 2011.
