Details of the trial of a plumber from Mansfield - announced by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) - could highlight the need for registered gas workers and tradespersons who have taken approved plumbing courses.
Lee Underwood was given two suspended prison sentences and ordered to 100 hours of community service after pretending to be Corgi-registered, lying about gas safety certificates and installing an appliance that may have compromised the residents' health during 2008 - among other HSE charges.
Councillor Mick Murphy, cabinet member for community safety at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: "I would urge local people to use our approved trader list to make sure they employ traders who are reliable and trustworthy."
HSE inspector added that people should always check that the worker has copies of gas safety certificates.
Corgi was replaced by the Gas Safe Register in April this year as the UK's only gas safety register.
