Prime Minister Gordon Brown has suggested that thousands of workers who have taken plumbing training courses could benefit from the new boiler scrappage scheme, which was launched yesterday (January 5th).
In a bid to reduce the UK's carbon emissions and save homeowners money on fuel bills, the scheme will see 125,000 households given £400 to go towards the cost of a new, eco-friendly boiler if their old one is energy inefficient and G-rated.
Most G-rated appliances are over 15 years old, the Energy Trust states.
Some 140,000 tonnes of carbon are expected to be saved each year thanks to the scheme and Mr Brown commented that plumbers could benefit too.
"[It] will help to secure 250,000 jobs across the tens of thousands of small and medium businesses involved in boiler manufacture, sales and installation that form a vital component of Britain's low carbon economy," he said.
Scott Byrom, utilities manager at moneysupermarket.com, recently said that the initiative's launch is "great to see".
