Solar water heating and other green improvements would be much more popular if they were affordable, an environmental source has suggested, which in turn might increase the need for plumbing courses in the UK.
Tony Rooke, environmental manager at Logica, described how the best way to change people's behaviour for the better is to make the sustainable option the cheaper one.
Unfortunately, he noted, only those people who are relatively well-off are able to afford the installation of solar water heating systems, which would require the services of a professional who has undertaken the correct plumbing courses.
"There are loans available to make homes more efficient, but a lot of the problem for individual people is that they can't afford it," explained Mr Rooke.
His comments were made following the news that the Green Party has pledged to introduce a free home-insulation service if they get in to power, which would cost the political group about £2 billion in 2010.
