Plumbing training apprentices could be among those set to work on the water supply improvements which are in the pipeline for Kirkdale.

The UK's largest listed water firm, United Utilities, will begin replacing old cast-iron water mains along Athol Street with modern plastic alternatives from next Monday.

Project Engineer Henry Bennett said that the improvements are designed to strengthen the overall reliability of the local water network and reduce the risk of leakage.

"Once the work is completed all affected areas of the road will be restored to their previous conditions," he stated.

Given that engineers will need to dig up the road, Mr Bennett added that the water company apologises for any short-term inconvenience the work may cause, but claimed that the four-week project will deliver long-term benefits to the community.

Local residents are being advised to make alternative parking arrangements where excavation works are evident but pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
