Engineers who have completed electrical courses could see a surge in demand, since one construction source has suggested that security lights may improve the security of individuals' gardens.

Melanie Griffiths, assistant editor of Homebuilding and Renovating Magazine, pointed out that some indoor lighting systems simulate people being in the house and a similar technique can be used in the garden.

If homeowners become more conscious of security in their garden, they may need to hire professionals who have taken electrical courses to fit the lighting systems in outdoor areas.

"Generally, a lot of self-builders are conscious of safety and they install gates and security lights," stated Ms Griffiths.

Her comments were made following research by Gocompare.com, which indicated that British people are set to spend £420 on average this summer on projects in their garden, with 12 per cent intending to completely redesign this section of their property.

The comparison site found that 24 per cent of those polled are concerned about items left in the garden.
