Tradespersons who have taken electrician or plumbing training courses could gain access to thousands of jobs after it was revealed by the Guardian that leading companies are planning on retrofitting hundreds of thousands of British homes with eco-friendly improvements.

It has been reported by the publication that firms such as Marks & Spencer, HSBC and EDF are teaming up with Imperial College and University College London to develop with initiatives that will see UK houses become more energy efficient.

Such schemes would involve overhauling houses' energy and water systems, it stated, and this could create jobs for many of the country's approved electricians and plumbers.

The Green Alliance's deputy director Thomas Lingard commented on the reports by saying that government involvement would be needed to ensure environmental benefits are maximised.

"What we really need is a hard commitment from [the] government to bring in policies which will make these kinds of retrofits more attractive and desirable to people around the country," he said.
