Technicians who have taken plumbing courses could find new employment opportunities arising from new legislation proposed this week.

The government announced in the second reading of the Energy Bill that landlords will need to achieve certain standards at their properties by 2016.

As well as creating work for engineers with plumbing course training, who may be required to fit boilers and other equipment, the regulations may actually be appreciated by the owners of the residences, according to one source.

John Alker, director of policy and communications at the UK Green Building Council, said: "Although it's slightly counterintuitive it actually provides a bit of additional certainty for landlords, because they know they have to do this."

In his opinion, consumers and businesses will accept a degree of regulation if it means that they can plan for the future, knowing exactly what they are aiming for.

The new legislation would see landlords obliged to get their properties up to scratch by 2016 at the earliest.
