Workers who have taken plumbing training courses could find that they may have a host of employment options available to them if the government cut value added tax (VAT).

According to a new report carried out by Experian for the Cut the VAT coalition, reducing the tax to five per cent on the labour element of repair, maintenance and improvement works for residential properties would create 24,000 jobs in the construction sector.

In addition, the move could inject billions into the economy, help make existing properties more environmentally-friendly and boost the country's housing stock, the document suggested.

Commenting on the findings, Lorely Burt, MP for Solihull, said: "We need to act quickly to get people back into work and a cut in VAT would provide many jobs immediately and would continue to provide a sustained flow of jobs over the next decade."

The Cut the VAT coalition consists of organisation's such as the Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors and Bathroom Manufacturers Association.
